How to Install LED Recessed Lighting
Recessed LED lighting transforms any room with clean, modern illumination. Follow our step-by-step guide to install recessed lights like a pro.
Before You Begin
Recessed LED lighting (also called can lights or downlights) provides clean, modern illumination without bulky fixtures hanging from your ceiling.
Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time needed: 2-4 hours for 4-6 lights
Tools required: Drill, hole saw (sized to your cans), wire strippers, voltage tester, fish tape, ladder
Safety First
Turn off power at the circuit breaker — not just the switch
Verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester
Check for obstructions in the ceiling (joists, pipes, wires) before cutting
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Spacing: Place lights 4-6 feet apart for even coverage
Distance from walls: Keep lights 2-3 feet from walls to avoid harsh shadows
Quantity rule of thumb: One 6-inch recessed light per 25 square feet of space
Recommended Layout for a 12×14 Kitchen:
- 6 recessed lights in two rows of 3
- 3 feet from each wall, 4 feet between lights
Step 2: Choose Your Fixtures
For LED recessed lighting, you have two options:
LED retrofit kits — Fit into existing recessed cans. Easiest option for upgrades.
New-construction LED cans — IC-rated (insulation contact safe) for new installations.
Recommended specs:
- 3000K-3500K for living spaces, 4000K for kitchens/bathrooms
- 90+ CRI for accurate colors
- Dimmable with LED-compatible dimmer switch
- IC-rated if touching insulation
Step 3: Mark and Cut Holes
1. Use painter's tape to mark light positions on the ceiling
2. Verify no joists or obstructions with a stud finder
3. Use the template included with your fixture to trace the circle
4. Cut with a drywall hole saw attached to your drill
5. Cut slowly — you can't un-cut drywall
Step 4: Run Wiring
1. Run 14/2 or 12/2 Romex from your switch box to the first light location
2. Daisy-chain from light to light
3. Use fish tape to pull wire through the ceiling cavity
4. Leave 12-14 inches of wire at each hole for connections
Important: If you're not comfortable with electrical wiring, hire a licensed electrician. This is the most critical step for safety.
Step 5: Install the Fixtures
1. Connect wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), copper to green (ground)
2. Secure connections with wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape
3. Push the housing up into the ceiling hole
4. Engage the clips to secure the can to the drywall
5. Install the LED trim or retrofit module
Step 6: Install the Dimmer Switch
Regular switches work, but a dimmer switch unlocks the full potential of your recessed LEDs.
- Use an LED-compatible dimmer (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora are top picks)
- Match the dimmer's wattage rating to your total LED wattage
- Follow the dimmer's wiring instructions carefully
Step 7: Test and Adjust
1. Restore power at the breaker
2. Test each light individually
3. Test dimming through the full range — look for flickering (indicates incompatible dimmer)
4. Adjust any light angles if using adjustable trims
Pro Tips
- Buy one extra light and trim in case of mistakes
- Use a consistent color temperature throughout the room
- Consider adding a smart dimmer for phone/voice control
- Take photos of wiring before closing up walls for future reference
